PORTSMOUTH — Police are searching for a man charged in connection with the death of a child in May.

Detectives said they need help locating 31-year-old Barthonia Lee Miller Jr., also known as “Lee.”

On May 28, police responded to the 300 block of Stratford Street in response to a call for an unresponsive child, according to a release. The 5-year-old was taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead, police said.

Miller Jr. is charged with felony homicide, malicious wounding, felony child neglect, cruelty to a child, failure to secure medical aid for an injured child, and contributing to the delinquency of a child.

Police believe “Lee” Miller Jr. could be residing in Roanoke or the Eastern Shore.

Ekara Mikkia Cowles, 31, was arrested Friday and is in custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office, awaiting arraignment. Police said she is facing accessory charges on the following: felony homicide, malicious wounding, felony child neglect, cruelty to a child, failure to secure medical aid for an injured child, and contributing to the delinquency of a child.

The investigation is ongoing and no other information has been released.
